Limited Stock - Westvleteren 8 is one of the products of the most difficult Trappist brewery to track down. Generally, the only place you're guaranteed to find Westvleteren beers is the café next door to the monastery. The beer is a rich brown colour with a patchy, greyish head that lasts well down the glass. Nose is lightly fruity and sherbety, with lemon, melon, citrus zest and possibly sour grapefruit notes. In the mouth it is very smooth, with fruity, smoky malt flavours giving it lots of body. A hint of light chocolate is also discernible. It has an alcohol bite on the back of the throat. Peppery notes, and maybe some soft banana hints, become apparent towards the finish, which is long and lightly malty. This is a very complex, very enjoyable beer that lived up to our expectations. But is it worth the price? Just about, if only to try the most exclusive trappist beer there is.
