The present categories in this style are: Tawny, Tawny Reserve, Tawny with an Indication of Age (10, 20, 30 and 40 years old) and Colheita. These are blends of wines from several years, except for Colheitas, wines of a single year that are similar to an aged Tawny of the same age. These wines are ready to drink when they are bottled. We particularly recommended a Tawny with an Indication of Age and Colheita.

Royal Oporto Dry White is a fine dry white Port made out of traditional white grape varieties such as a Malvazia Fina. Aged in wood barrels for 3 years, this type of Port is made using the same procedures as for other Ports but allowing fermentation to continue for longer before the fortification. Dry White Porto is known as a classic aperitif, recommended to be drunk chilled and served with olives and roasted almonds. It is also very pleasant on the rocks garnished with a slice of orange.

The Quinta das Carvalhas has a prominent position on the left bank of the Douro River facing Pinhγo. It covers the whole of the hillside facing the Douro river extends over the summit - which is crowned by the dominated Casa Redonda, a guest house visible from miles around - and occupies part of the upper slopes of the right bank of the Rio Torto. It is most certainly the largest Quinta in the whole of the Douro Region and undoubtedly the jewel of Real Companhia Velha crown. Written reference about Carvalhas can be traced back to 1759 although was much more recently that Carvalhas was expanded to its current size of 600 hectares.

Taylor's are pioneers of this exciting style, having introduced it in 1934. It is made in exactly the same way as conventional port, but using white grapes rather than red. As the name suggests, it has a drier, fruity taste, and is an unusual (and unusually good) aperitif, best served chilled. Or drink it as guests do at Quinta de Vargellas - poured over ice in a large glass, topped up with tonic, and topped with a leaf of fresh mint. A salted almond or two does not go amiss.

Taylor's Select Port is blended from red wines produced in the upper Douro Valley, chosen for their depth of colour, intense fruit and full, firm palate. These wines are matured for about three years in oak vats, where they soften and develop without losing their fresh, intense fruity character and their deep ruby colour. Taylor's Select is an excellent dessert wine, particularly with cheese. The wine is deep ruby-red with a garnet rim. It has a firm, vigorous, full-bodied palate, with powerful fruit flavours and a long finish. The wine is higher in alcohol than regular wines, at 20%. Once opened, the wine will keep for several weeks. The wine is best served at 20ΊC.
