The Westvleteren brewery in the abbey of St Sixtus decided to contract the brewing of its commercial product to the St Bernardus brewery at Watou from the end of WWII until 1992 when it took back the rights to the term Trappist and now brews the commercial brands itself. Until that date in 1992, this was a Trappist beer, after that date it became an Abbey beer. When it lost its Trappist status the name St Sixtus was removed from the label. It would be interesting to drink this with a bottle of Westvleteren 12 to see who really does make a better job of the recipe. From what I understand St Bernardus has the original yeast so Westvleteren had to get their yeast from Westmalle. The alcohol is well used to add depth and flavour to a very creamy, smooth, sweet and fruity brew. Quite delicious.

One of a number of small breweries in and around Watou, deep in West Flanders hop country, this classic abbey beer brewer names itself after its home village's patron saint. It held a license from the Trappist abbey of St Sixtus at Westvleteren, not far away, until the abbey revived brewing in its own right, and both brewers' products still show a resemblance. St Bernardus have retained not only the full and fruity quality of the beers, but also the distinctive label illustration of a jolly beer-quaffing monk. The current beer, a bottle-conditioned 'dubbel' brown ale, has the lowest gravity in the range. Sint-Bernardus Pater 6 is deep brown with ruby highlights and a nice rich head. There's an intense aroma, initially and most strikingly of bananas but with later touches of cream, sweet peas and a sourish custardy fragrance that's strangely like sweat. The banana quality continues into the fruity palate which also has tangy citric notes and a touch of iron, along with a richly creamy texture. On the swallow there's a soft strawberry character, then more oranges in the finish, along with some ashy hops, and a lingering cough candy quality. This is an excellent and satisfying beer, one of the very best Belgian abbey double types around.

Full name of tasted sample is "St. Bernardus Prior 8 Cuvée 2002", exlusively bottled in 75cl bottles with screenprint. No real indication of different recipe, even tweaking, of the original as in the 33cl. It has a dark-brown colour, as left over strong tea, with a creamy head, that is not lasting. Nose: candi sugar, roasted malts, something like fresh mint or sage leaf, woody.Taste: first like wet brown sugar, but overlying bitterness takes over; some hops, some dark malts. Again shrubwood, mouldy-in-a-nice-way aroma. A little liquorice, perfumey. balance between bitterness and sweet nearly perfect. Mouthfeel: quite chewy. Alcohol is definitely there. Aftertaste: long, perfumed diminishing of main taste.

23 June 1978: a milestone in the history of special beers. That day a Cuvée de Ciney Brune was drawn for the first time in café "Rubens", underneath the church tower of the pleasant Walloon village of Ciney. It was Roger Demarche who designed this beer and toured the region to sell the first barrels. The beer was successful and soon developed from a local beer into a national asset. Its success meant that in 1980 a crisp blonde beer joined the powerful brunette. Halfway the 1980s this top-class beer was perfected and was known from then on as Ciney. In 1986 the range was further extended by the addition of the amber-coloured Ciney Spéciale. Now that Ciney is part of Alken-Maes it will get every opportunity to satisfy consumers throughout the country. Ciney Blonde is a high-fermentation beer staying clear at low temperatures unlike other special blonde beers. A mild and pure blonde beer, with a fruity flavour set off by a well-balanced pleasant bitterness. Alc. 7 % vol.
