Duchesse de Bourgogne from Brouwerij Verhaeghe is a traditional Flemish red ale. This refreshing ale is matured in oak casks; smooth with a rich texture and interplay of passion fruit, and chocolate, and a long, dry and acidic finish. After the first and secondary fermentation, the beer goes for maturation into the oak barrels for 18 months. The final product is a blend of younger 8 month old beer with 18 month old beer. The average age of the Duchesse de Bourgogne before being bottled or filled in kegs is 12 months.

Poperings Hommelbier is a beautiful, pale-coloured beer from one of Belgium's more noteworthy hop-producing areas. The short-lived, loose head subsides to light notes of vanilla and spice on the nose, clearly marking this out as close in style to a tripel. Although light on the nose, there is the promise of alcoholic strength, which is furthered in the mouth. There is a slightly metallic, and a slightly soapy flavour, but this doesn't detract from the spicy, vanilla notes that are otherwise very pleasant. It is quite sweet, but not too cloying. Finish is quite tart, leaving a citrusy, hoppy yet sweetish aftertaste. A fair effort, but it lacks the complexity and drinkability to beat better examples.
