Poperings Hommelbier is a beautiful, pale-coloured beer from one of Belgium's more noteworthy hop-producing areas. The short-lived, loose head subsides to light notes of vanilla and spice on the nose, clearly marking this out as close in style to a tripel. Although light on the nose, there is the promise of alcoholic strength, which is furthered in the mouth. There is a slightly metallic, and a slightly soapy flavour, but this doesn't detract from the spicy, vanilla notes that are otherwise very pleasant. It is quite sweet, but not too cloying. Finish is quite tart, leaving a citrusy, hoppy yet sweetish aftertaste. A fair effort, but it lacks the complexity and drinkability to beat better examples.

Moeder Overste has a fantastic looking head. The retention is quite remarkable even after the hazed copper coloured brew is sipped upon. It has a rustic aroma of nutty yeast, husky grain and a mild fruitiness of nectarines and mandarin oranges. Taste: Juicy middle with a faint buttery flavour, light tropical fruit within the esters. Good malt foundation with a soft powdery chalky yeast in tow, nutty bready finish with some more fruity esters in the end. Mouthfeel: Light to moderate bodied and a bit slick on the tongue, nice smoothness as well. Drinkability & Notes: Layered complexities are dreamy, a sensual tripel. Easy to quaff quickly so be careful.
