Delirium Nocturnum is a Belgian ale weighing in at 8.5% alcohol by volume, and packaged in a funky faux-ceramic painted bottle. It's brewed by Brouwerij Huyghe in Belgium. Appearance: Pours a rich brown, with a thick tan head. Mostly clear. I expected more of a yellow color. Smell: Fruity—apple, berry... Jolly Rancher? Sweet sugar. Mostly sweet apple and a little funky sourness. Taste: Sour, musty—à la a Belgian farmhouse ale—perhaps green apple. Malty. Leather? A hint of it's alcoholic strength. Candy-ish. Mouthfeel: Full, rich; not chewy-thick though. Lots of carbonation, effervescence... light. Overall, it's a musty-sour-sweet-funky Belgian ale, full of complexity and pretty good. I won't say it's the best Belgian beer I've had, but it stands up.

It is often in this state that drinkers begin to see the fabled pink elephants featured on the labels of the distinctive Delirium Tremens bottles. The beer is brewed by the Huyghe brewery, which has been in existence since 1654 and now exports 65% of their production from Belgium. Delirium Tremens is a beer of fine manufacture and was voted ‘Best Beer in the World’ by specialists in 1997. Conceived with three different yeasts it presents a beautiful colour, blond and coppery as well as a compact and abundant head. The beer has a nose of wheat and barley with traces of coriander and orange. Full and round in the mouth it is also spicy, with a pleasant bitterness to the taste. This beer has an abv of 9% so those pink elephants are never far away !
